The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) was founded in 1947 as the world's first educational and scientific computing society. TECHNews, updated three times a week, is available online to non-members.

The Institute for Certification for Computer Professionals (ICCP) offers non-vendor-specific, multi-platform CCP certification for professional programmers and other information systems professionals and students. Current certificate holders can update their Professional Development credits online.

The IEEE Computer Society, with nearly 100,000 members, is the world's leading organization of computer professionals. Its vision is to be the leading provider of technical information and services.

The International Function Point Users Group (IFPUG) promotes the management of application software development through the use of Function Point Analysis. It offers CFPS certification.

The Network and Systems Professionals Association (NaSPA) publishes technical SUPPORT, which discusses topics of importance in mainframe, host-based and network-oriented environments. It includes user experiences installing particulars product or streamlining a particular process, and tips and techniques for operating system implementation and maintenance.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is an international organization of project managers. It has local chapters, as well as Special Interest Groups.


Discussion Groups and Listservs:

The C/C++ Users Group provides source code samples from the Open Source community.

Google is the current host of Usenet groups, such as ibm-main, comp.lang.asm370, comp.lang.c, comp.lang.cobol and comp.lang.java.

Training and Education:

IBM's developerWorks training, tutorials and certification site favors newer technolgies like Java, Linux and XML, but has CICS and other tutorials. Or go to the PartnerWorld for Developers page to locate resources specifically for software developers.
